Sitting nice and quiet in geography, the teacher rambling on about how global warming isn't true, its quite nice and relaxing. One of my class mates pushes his planner toward me with the figure £1200 on it. "Whats that then?" I ask, and he replies "its my EMA income".
WHAT?! I used to work for 5.75 and hour and it took me 6-8 weeks to earn that sort of cash on top of sixth form. Not that I hate people who get allowances and the like (apart from people who seek jobs for eternity.)
This is another example of New Labour "Equality". Oh yes, equal opportunities for all! My arse, heres a list of things that I haven't got an equal opportunity for;
1) Educational Maintenance Allowance, basically, my parents earn too much for me to get this. + They are married which puts a big red X through my name.
2) University opportunities. I fancied a summer school; the criteria were;
a) Your parents did not attend university
b) Your parents are not in professional jobs
c) You recieve EMA
d) You get good grades at college.
Unfortunately because my mother went to university and is now a teacher both of those are out. Secondly because, as I've already mentioned they earn far too much according to Mr Brown thats C gone. I suppose I'm left with my grades, woo hoo. But what good is that if all the university places are gone!?
Well Mr Brown, not all of us earn £200,000 per year, have all our expenses paid and have a free private residence in London.
Please, if you are on the recieving end of this, I am NOT poking fun at you, in fact, I'm for the government helping people out. But if they're going to help people out with money to make us all EQUAL then its not very EQUAL if it only goes to some people. This is a form of positive discrimination making some more equal than others.
Either Brown gets his act together, or I'm standing for election next year.
